Incantations of Grief: A Ceremony in the Circle of Sorrow
Incantations of Grief: A Ceremony in the Circle of Sorrow
Where: 435 South 5th Street, Brooklyn, New York 11211 - Studio #1
When: November 22, 2026
Time: 3 - 5pm
During this ritualized workshop, participants will move between ceremony, poetry, writing, and speaking. Georgia will read from The Circle Room and Gregory Orr's Concerning the Book That Is the Body of the Beloved. Participants will write and speak within a ceremonial container marked by a circular ribbon within which we will sit. The ribbon will be manipulated as we name our guides and those people or situations we grieve for; a flower essence will be shared, and an altar will be tended. At the end of the event, participants will leave with their own Grief Incantation- a blessing to honor themselves, their grief, or the object of their grief. They will also carry a talisman: a beeswax candle with a piece of our ceremonial ribbon tied to it, an object to tether them back to the grief circle.
Please note:
This is a: * phone free event * an interactive ceremony where people will be invited to share / participate * a space for anyone who carries sorrow, grief, sadness - one does not have to have experienced a "loss" to participate in the ceremony-workshop.
The Circle Room: A Book in Ceremony is an artist book that archives Georgia Wall's practice as a Ceremonialist. It gathers fragments from ceremonies, as well as incantations created for individuals Wall has worked with over the last few years. Woven between these texts is poetry and a letter for each month of the year. The Circle Room is both an archive and a sacred object which is meant to function as a poetic clock tracing the arc of a year. This book is born out of ceremony and becomes a ceremony as you read it.
This workshop is a part of The Fifth Room workshop series co - created by Krystal Frame of Sustain Frame and Cara bringing together instructors, artists, and community to explore transforming grief through ritual and craft-based practices.
Drawing on John Coltrane's The Coltrane Circle, the mathematics of jazz, and Five Element theory, the series explores the alchemical theme of Solve et Coagula — to dissolve and reform. We believe grief works in a spiral, leading us through transformation but never quite back to the place where we started.
